Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon

The Internet Movie Database       Movie Reviews

A team of moviemakers interviews and follows a serial killer.

And that should tell you everything you need to know about this wonderful and gory movie. In the best Chris Guest mockumentary style, the team of grad students finds, interviews and follows Leslie Vernon as he plans his revenge.

This is a good and funny sendup of the ‘serial slasher’ genre, including a character played by Robert Englund, aka Freddie Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street (bonus question: what huge star had his first movie role in NoES?*) and it’s amazing how normal and charming he looks!

But of course the buildup is the disconnect between the making of the documentary, and what is actually going to happen when the filmmakers finally realize what’s happening…and it’s handled very well.

Librarian alert: a hilarious scene takes place in (of course) the town library.

If you don’t mind a lot of blood and body parts (this otter certainly doesn’t), this is a funny sendup of slasher movies that’s a very good movie on its own. Watch and enjoy!

*Johnny Depp. Believe it or not.
