From a short story of the same name by E. Annie Proulx
Digression: boy, this woman must be a hot property now, her only two movie credits are this one and The Shipping News, both excellent films. You go, girl!
Okay, it’s a gay cowboy movie. Now that we have that out of our systems (and why is everyone exclaiming over that? is there some reason to think that gay men can’t be rough tough cowboy types? or that circumstances where men are alone together for long periods of time (such as sea voyages) don’t lead to homosexual encounters, whether those involved consider themselves gay or not? get real.)
Anyway. This is one of the most wonderful movies ever. Truly, all the hype you’ve heard is absolutely accurate. And I hope it gets a ton of Oscars, although it’ll be hard to decide who gets best actor…maybe Gyllenhaal and Ledger could share it?
