Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

It’s a pirate movie, does it need a plot summary? The good guys fight the bad guys, ships, danger, sword fights, you know.

OK, this has got to be the LAMEST idea ever, make a MOVIE about a RIDE at DISNEYLAND? Give me a break! Not to mention that it’s PG-13, usually the kiss of death for action movies.

And yet…it was absolutely, without a doubt, one of the best pirate movies EVER. Go figure. Once in a while Hollywood does something right.

Yes, I loved this movie…it’s long, about 2 hours and 40 minutes…Virago and I went to see the late show, the night after seeing Terminator 3, which sucked rocks, so we were already kinda tired, and almost didn’t go…but we were sure glad we did. And I didn’t look at my watch once.

Not to mention that we had actually planned to see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen that night, but got the show times wrong…this was actually second choice. Am I ever glad I didn’t pay nine and a half bucks for THAT turkey…!!

This one has EVERYTHING. A roller coaster of a plot, full of pirates and ships and exotic locales, magical curses and sword fights, beautiful ladies (who get to kick some serious booty, I like that!), danger and rescues and all that stuff. And it works. It works REALLY WELL.

The plot is good, very funny but not so slapstick that it ruins the story…the people who made this obviously love all those old pirate movies, they hit all the right notes. The characters are interesting but again, even Johnny Depp’s character, wacko as he is, is not so far over the top that one’s disbelief hits the ground with a loud THUD…and Johnny Depp is a SERIOUS HONEY, he’s wonderful in this. Orlando Bloom swashes his buckle well, and Geoffrey Rush is a bad guy you love to hate.

No oogies, either, pretty good for a movie full of TCBFTD*…just great special effects. GREAT special effects.

And, for those of us who have been to Disneyland A MILLION TIMES (this old Otter even remembers when the Pirates of the Caribbean ride opened, what a thrill!) there are so many quick visual references to the ride, that don’t detract from the plot, but just add more fun if you catch them…very very well done.

I was so pleasantly surprised by how good this was! and I’m going to go see it again as soon as possible. Well worth the nine bucks.
